All undergradaute students pursuing a degree or certificate in the College are required to submit a formal intent to graduate form to be considered for a particular graduation cycle: Fall, Spring, or Summer.
If you have declared more than one degree, you must submit an intent to graduate in the same graduation cycle for each degree; this is the mechanism for ensuring that all degrees are awarded at the same time.
If a concurrent degree is in the College, you must submit the intent to graduate in the same graduation cycle through the College's student portal.
If a concurrent degree is outside the College, you must contact the other school that awards the non-College degree to inquire about their graduation and application procedures. You must apply for the same graduation cycle in which you intend to graduate with a degree awarded by the College.
If you have declared a certificate in the College, you must submit a formal intent to graduate with that certificate in the same graduation cycle as the one in which you intend to graduate with your degree(s).
If you declared a non-College certificate, you must contact the other school that awards that certificate to inquire about their graduation and application procedures. Some non-College certificates are standalone credentials and thus do not need to be awarded concurrently with undergraduate degrees. However, if the non-College certificate you are pursuing does need to be awarded concurrently with your degree, you must apply for the same graduation cycle in which you intend to graduate with the College degree.
Minors are always attached to degrees. So, you will not submit a separate intent to graduate for your minors. Minors attached to College degrees will be reviewed for graduation eligibility at the same time as the College degree they are attached to.
Submit your formal intent to graduate by the Graduation Application Priority Deadline to ensure you receive a Senior Check from your College Academic Advisor for each College major program and certificate.
Submit your formal intent to graduate by the Commencement Program Deadline to ensure your name is included in the Commencement Ceremony Program associated with your intended graduation cycle. Please be aware that participating in commencement does not guarantee you will be approved for graduation.
If you miss the deadlines noted above, you can still submit your formal intent to graduate without issue through the end of your intended final term. There is no guarantee that your intent to graduate will be considered after the full term ends. To inquire about options to submit your intent to graduate after full term ends, please contact the College Recorder's Office at coasrecd@iu.edu. Be sure to include your 10-Digit University ID Number in the body of the message. Late requests will be considered on a case by case basis.
A variety of recognition ceremonies take place on the IU Bloomington campus to commemorate graduation before graduation is finalized and degrees are awarded. Participation in any of these events does not guarantee degree conferral. These ceremonies are managed by a variety of offices on the IU Bloomington campus. All questions about the ceremonies should be directed to the appropriate office.
The Office of University Events coordinates the campus-wide Commencement Ceremonies, which are held in December (for intended Fall graduates) and in May (for intended Spring graduates and intended Summer graduates). To ensure your name is included in the Commencement Ceremony Program, you must apply for graduation by the Commencement Program Deadline for each degree and certificate on your academic record.
The College hosts Senior Send-Off events to recognize students who intend to graduate with a College degree. Inquiries about the event can be directed to college@iu.edu.
The three schools within the College also host events to recognize students who intend to graduate with one of their degrees.
Many, but not all, departments also host recognition events for intended graduates. Check with your major department to inquire about additional recognition ceremonies.
Once the graduation application is submitted, most students will undergo three phases of review prior to graduation.
Students who submit an intent to graduate by the Graduation Application Priority Deadline of their intended graduation cycle can expect to receive a Senior Check from their College major and certificate program academic advisors.
Students who submit an intent to graduate by the Graduation Application Priority Deadline of their intended graduation cycle can expect to receive an initial graduation audit of graduation eligibility from the College Recorder's Office during the first half of their intended final semester.
After transcripts are available with official grades for the full term, students on the intended graduation list can expect to receive a final audit of graduation eligibility from the College Recorder's Office before the Transcripts with Degree(s) deadline.
You cannot graduate if you have not met all the requirements for your degree(s) and major(s). Below are some common issues that impact graduation eligibility.
Make plans to ensure that all of your grades are recorded on your IU transcript by the College's All Grades on the IU Transcript deadline!
All Not Yet Recorded (NR) grades must be resolved to a final grade in order for you to be eligible for graduation. This includes courses taken at other IU campuses and during past semesters.
Grades of Incomplete (I) and deferred grades (R) must also be resolved to a satisfactory final grade by the deadline in order to count toward degree requirements.
IU-sponsored or co-sponsored overseas coursework must be posted to your IU academic record in order for you to be eligible for graduation, even if the coursework and credit is not needed to satisfy degree requirements.
All concurrent degrees on your record must have all degree requirements completed in the same semester in order to be eligible for graduation.
Different offices at Indiana University manage documentation related to your graduation status. Please review the information below to determine what office may best suit your needs or questions.
The College Recorder's Office can review the academic record of students who need to demonstrate their graduation status in an official capacity before transcripts with degree(s) are available. To request such a letter, email coasrecd@iu.edu with your 10-Digit University ID number. You must also forward documentation to coasrecd@iu.edu that demonstrates what you need to confirm to a third party and confirms any deadline you are facing. Student requests will be considered on a case by case basis.
Distribution of electronic CeDiplomas occur one to two months after transcripts with degree(s) are available, and printed diplomas are mailed to your diploma address 8 to 10 weeks after transcripts with degree(s) are available. Both processes are managed by the Bloomington Campus Office Registrar. Contact them directly with any questions using Student Central's Secure Contact Form and selecting a topic from the Transcripts & Diplomas menu that best describes your question.
Official transcript requests must be submitted to and processed by the Indiana University Transcripts office for all IU campuses. Their website provides detailed information about requesting IU transcripts, apostilles, enrollment verifications, and submitting official external transcripts to Indiana University.
In the event of electronic failure, you must have a copy of your intent to graduate application form and the email confirmation verifying that your form was submitted.
If you have any questions about your graduation application, contact the Recorder's Office at 812-855-1821 or coasdeg@iu.edu.
